The Taos Area

Rio Grande Gorge |
Full of history and rich with culture Taos remains one of the Southwest's most unique towns. Whether it be hitting the slopes, taking a hike, shopping the plaza, or just simply relaxing and enjoying the weather Taos is full of activities for everyone.
In
and around the town, the culture really comes to life in the forms of
artwork, craft fairs, music and history. Galleries and boutiques line
the Plaza and main streets with work from local artisans as well as
world renowned artists. Stroll down Artists’ Row to discover the Harwood
Museum of Art and the Blumenschein Home and Museum. Throughout the
year, many talented artists travel to Taos to teach art classes and the
highways are littered with young and seasoned artists alike. On the
other side of the Plaza is the Kit Carson Home and Museum, where the
dramatic history of Taos lingers today in its architecture and legends.
Just a few miles away is the Taos Pueblo, where Native American adobe
buildings stand as the oldest continually inhabited Pueblo. Between the
Pueblo’s pow wows, the local Chamber Music festival, Summer Music in
the Mountains and local nightly music scattered around the Plaza, Taos
has much to offer.

Taos Pueblo |
For
the outdoor enthusiast there is skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, camping,
horseback riding, river raft trips, highway and mountain biking, ballooning,
and excellent fly fishing. In the winter, skiing is a must, whether it
be on Taos Ski Valley’s alpine runs or on easier slopes at Angel Fire,
Red River or Sipapu, easy drives away for a ski day.
Other
great sites to visit include the Church of Los Ranchos de Taos,
the Rio Grande Gorge, the Earthship, or a hike to Williams Lake or
Wheeler Peak boasting a altitude of 13,161 feet. A short drive away is
Ojo Caliente Spa to relax your bones with the natural healing waters of
New Mexico. Children find plenty to do at Twirl, Kit Carson Park or the
Taos Youth and Family Center with swimming, indoor activities and winter
ice skating. Relaxing by the many local streams is always a treat
while enjoying the beauty and grandeur of the everlasting skyscapes and
landscapes coming together with the mountains.
Morning,
noon or evening, the local cuisine awaits you offering continental or
“New Mexican” food flavors, often grown from local farmers, to excite
the palette. You can’t miss the breakfast burrito, or the bowl of green
chile and a margarita, but with a variety of dining styles, you can
easily find the desired food, wine or brew to fit your mood.
Fortunately,
no glorified description of Taos will ever suffice. It is a must that
everyone who visits share in the experience of its climate, culture and
cuisine to discover why Taos has remained such an important part of
Northern New Mexico and the traditions of the Southwest.
